Ready to Volunteer?
In 1981 a small group of volunteers came together to form Bowling Green Hospice. Now known as Hospice of Southern Kentucky, volunteers continue to have an essential role in all we do more than forty years later! Our team of volunteers are dedicated and compassionate people who play an important role in supporting our patients and their families.
One thing our volunteers love about our program is the flexibility. Volunteers help decide how they serve based on their own experiences, comfort level, and available time. Some choose to serve 2-4 hours a week, while others may give more or less time. The important thing is that their service is meaningful, and we work to make sure each assignment is a good fit for both the volunteers and our team.
At HSK, our volunteers are considered “unpaid staff” and go through a similar process to our paid team members. This includes an application, in-person orientation, online training, background check, and TB test—all provided at no cost to you.

Home Team
Home Team Volunteers offer support and companionship for patients and their families wherever they call home. Volunteers visit patients in their residence, assisted living community or skilled nursing facility. They provide companionship for patients and much needed respite for caregivers. These special volunteers are an integral part of our multi-disciplinary team, bringing joy to patients and easing the burdens of family members.

Hospice House Volunteers
Volunteers serve daily at the Hospice House, which is our little hospital. Here, volunteers assist staff by greeting visitors, addressing cards and stocking the family room with snacks and coffee.

Pet Therapy Volunteers
Pet Therapy Volunteers visit patients to offer animal assisted therapy. Pet Partners must be certified and insured, along with having completed training with an organization such as Therapy Dogs International. All Pet Partner volunteers must also complete hospice family support volunteer training.

Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteers
Hospice of Southern Kentucky pairs trained Veteran Volunteers with hospice patients who are Veterans. Volunteers who have served in the military have the unique ability to relate and connect with our Veteran patients and their families, sharing a common language, code of conduct, and sense of humor.

11th Hour Program
The 11th Hour Program exists to enhance the final hours of terminally ill patients. 11th Hour volunteers offer a calm, comforting presence at the bedside of dying patients.HSK recognizes that dying is much more than a medical event. It is a time for honoring the life lived and providing companionship and dignity in the passing. With our special, caring, and compassionate 11th Hour Volunteers, no one has to die alone.
